Intensive ESL / ESOL Programs

We have multiple levels of instruction, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Unlike at other institutions, in all levels of Capital College's English as a Second Language / English for Speakers of Other Languages courses, students learn English for the purposes of reading, writing, listening, AND speaking.

Placement

Before you enroll, you will interview with a faculty member who will help determine your placement level. Students may need to take placement tests to help decide which level is best for them.

English for Special Purposes (Electives)

For more advanced learners, we also offer classes that focus on English for academic and business purposes. Lessons are structured based on student need.

Test Preparation

We have classes for students preparing to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Trained instructors will provide the training foundation necessary to build and improve student TOEFL scores.

OUR SCHEDULE

Each session runs for eight weeks with six levels of instructions. Sessions begin the first week of each month.

We offer three options to give students the choice to study at their convenience. Multiple options can be chosen as there is no limit to how many classes in which a student can enroll.

PROGRAM LEVELS

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES*

1-on-1 Tutoring (ESL 601) Objective

Students get personalized, individual attention with an experienced, patient instructor. Learn to read, write, speak, and understand English at your pace. Work on your problem areas, practice interacting with English-speakers in public, and take field trips to museums, libraries, the mall, and more!

Beginner 1 (ESL 101) Objectives

Students will be able to understand and use familiar everyday American English expressions and very basic phrases for immediate survival in their community. They will be able to introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have. Finally, students will be able to interact in a basic way with other English speakers and have the language tools to request clarification or help if they do not understand information given to them.

Beginner 2 (ESL 102) Objectives

Students will be able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to common areas of their lives (e.g., very basic personal and family information, shopping, neighborhood, employment). They will be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks that require a simple and direct exchange of information on things that they are familiar with and do every day. Lastly, they will be able to describe in simple terms things about their background, where they live and the things they need.

Intermediate (ESL 201) Objectives

Students will be able to understand the main points of standard American English conversation on familiar matters regularly encountered at their place of work, school, and leisure. They will be able to interact with a level of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers easier. They will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for their opinions and plans.

Advanced (ESL 301) Objectives

Students will be able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning in American English. They will be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much difficulty. They will have the ability to use English flexibly with a variety of useful expressions at their command. Finally, they will produce clear, well-structured, detailed speaking and writing on complex subjects, showing the ability to organize their thoughts in English using logical connectors and cohesive devices.

English for Special Purposes (ESL 501) Objective

Students will be able to understand and use vocabulary related to business or academic environments. They will be able to command the language flexibly and effectively for educational and professional purposes which includes summarizing information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Lastly they will become familiar with the cultural environment of America’s higher education system or its professional workplace environment.

TOEFL (ESL 401) Objective

Students will be able to perform at optimal proficiency on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required for non-native English college applicants. They will understand the structure, content and grading scale of the TOEFL and become familiarized with the test procedures. They will display adequate ability to engage reading, writing, listening and speaking assignments at the college level and become confidently prepared to achieve their maximum potential on the exam.
